Worm products for soybeans in Missouri…

Today I received an email wanting to know about options for control of worms in soybean and I thought this would be good information to share with everyone.

Last year, there were problems controlling corn earworms in soybeans with pyrethroid insecticides (pyrethroids are products like Karate, Mustang Max and many other generic formulations). It turns out that about 30% of our “corn earworm” population in some soybean fields were tobacco budworm. Tobacco budworm is resistant to pyrethroid insecticides, so the wrong product was used to begin with.  To know what the options are to target worms in soybeans, below is a table that lists many of the common worm pests present in soybeans and insecticides that are specific to worm pests. Additionally, there is a brief description of each worm-specific insecticide providing information about rates, restrictions, PHI and what Group of insecticide each product is. For those unfamiliar with the purpose for grouping insecticides, the Group number tells what class of chemical the insecticide is for insecticide resistance management purposes. If you are making two applications for a specific insect, it is best not to apply insecticides from the same Group. Also, see below for pictures and descriptions of several of pests listed in the table.

Belt SC (flubendiamide) (2-3 fl oz/A; 6 fl oz/A per season; must allow for 5 days between applications; PHI = 14 days for seed harvest, 3 days for forage; Group 28)

Intrepid 2 (methoxyfenozide ) (4-8 fl oz/A; no more than 4 applications per season, PHI = 14 days for seed harvest, 7 days for forage; Group 18)

Larvin 3.2 (thiodicarb) (10-30 fl oz/A; no more than 4 applications or  120 fl oz/A per season; must allow 7 days between applications; PHI = 28 days for seed harvest, do NOT feed forage to livestock; Group 1A)

Steward 1.25 (indoxacarb) (4.6-11.3 fl oz/A; no more than 45 fl oz/A per year; must allow 5 days between applications; PHI = 21 days for seed harvest; do NOT feed forage to livestock; Group 22)

Tracer 4 (spinosad) (1-2 fl oz/A, depending on worms present; do not apply more than 6 fl oz/A per year; do not make more than 2 consecutive applications; PHI = 28 days for seed harvest; do NOT feed forage to livestock; Group 5)
